In India, big cars have a huge fan following since Adam and Eve. The tall boys attract a huge fan following. In the road conditions that exist in India, everyone wants to have cars that have road presence and won’t be easily dominated in traffic. Plus, traditional SUVs and MPVs offered more safety and still do.
Seven-seater cars have always been favourites on the Indian roads with their superb presence and their capacity to fit in big families along with cargo. Here’s a look at some of the most popular and good to live with SUVs on the Indian roads that are available today.
The elder sibling to one of the best-selling SUVs in India, the Hyundai Creta, Alcazar was launched as the bigger version of the same back in June 2021. With the 2024 facelift, the Alcazar comes with a refreshed grille, full-width LED lighting and Level-2 ADAS capabilities. Its powertrain includes a 1.5-litre CRDi and a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine.
The Jeep Meridian might not have the best third row in this list, it makes up in numbers in terms of driving, coming with a 1956 cc diesel engine that makes 168 bhp and gets both manual and automatic transmission, as well as front-wheel drive and four-wheel-drive options. While not the top choice for many, the Meridian comes with amazing performance from the engine, amazing ride quality and great off-road ability.
The Mahindra Scorpio N is a big step forward from the original Classic variant in every aspect. For a start, it is a comfortable SUV with a proper cargo space and good enough room in the third row. In terms of luxury, it gets leatherette upholstery, and the front seat has amazing lumbar support and cushioning for a smooth, long drive. It comes with Level 2 ADAS along with modern goodies like an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment and a seven-inch semi-digital instrument cluster.
The original Toyota Innova was a pioneer of MPVs in India back in 2005, and the Hycross has extended the tradition of that. It has managed to blend modern technology with old school. It has one of the best third-row seating, while still having decent cargo space. Coming as a hybrid power SUV, it has an amazing ride quality and makes up for a good drive.
The Tata Safari has been renewed with much more organised trim levels, which admittedly had become too complicated. It comes with a 2.0-litre KRYOTEC diesel engine and OMEGARC architecture from Land Rover’s D8 Platform. On the inside, it is a story of opulence, tan oak-inspired leatherette, along with quite rich tan accents.
