New Delhi: Toyota is stepping on the gas in India again. The Japanese automaker is preparing one of its biggest product expansions yet, aiming to introduce 15 new or refreshed models by 2030 as it eyes a 10 percent market share. The company, which currently holds around 8 percent, has seen India rise to become its third-largest global market after the US and China, according to Reuters.

The upcoming line-up will include two all-new SUVs and an affordable pickup, alongside updates to existing models. This expansion aligns with Toyota’s growing investment in local manufacturing, as its annual capacity is expected to cross 1 million units once new plants in Karnataka and Maharashtra become operational.

Among the most anticipated launches is the Land Cruiser FJ, a compact off-roader that made its global debut at the Japan Mobility Show 2025. The model will sit below the larger Land Cruiser series and is being tailored for Indian conditions, with a rugged yet compact design.

Toyota is also developing a new SUV based on the Hilux Champ architecture, already sold in Southeast Asian markets such as Indonesia and Thailand. This model is expected to cater to buyers who want a more lifestyle-oriented vehicle with strong utility capabilities.

Adding to the mix is an all-new affordable pickup, positioned below the Hilux, designed for India’s rural and semi-urban markets. This move reflects Toyota’s growing focus on expanding outside major cities, targeting practical buyers who value durability and affordability over luxury.

Toyota expands production and rural reach

Toyota’s expansion is backed by a USD 3 billion (₹25,500 crore) investment in India, with major upgrades coming to its Bidadi plant in Karnataka and a new facility being built in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Maharashtra. Together, these will push the company’s total annual production capacity beyond 10 lakh vehicles.

The new plants will also cater to exports, especially for SUVs destined for Africa and the Middle East. One of the models likely to be exported is the new Land Cruiser FJ, which could become a global compact off-roader for emerging markets.

To strengthen its reach further, Toyota is planning to expand its rural dealership network by opening smaller, lean-format showrooms with limited display space and compact workshops. This strategy is aimed at improving accessibility in Tier-3 and Tier-4 towns, where demand for affordable and durable vehicles is steadily growing.

India becomes Toyota’s global growth engine

Toyota Kirloskar Motor, the brand’s Indian subsidiary, recorded record profits of USD 640 million (₹54,400 crore) in the last fiscal year. The growth was driven largely by high plant utilization and strong sales of rebadged Suzuki models like the Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Innova Hycross, which made up over half of Toyota’s 2024 sales.

With India now ranking as Toyota’s third-largest market globally, the upcoming models; led by the Land Cruiser FJ and Hilux Champ-based SUV, could cement its position in the country’s growing SUV segment.
