India Post merges Registered and Speed Post, faster delivery from Sept 1

New Delhi: India Post has made an announcement that it is set to merge registered post with speed post for all domestic mail delivery, effective from September 1. The proposed move is aimed at streamlining the process of India Post Services, reducing operational costs while simultaneously offering more reliable, faster delivery with a better tracking system under a single umbrella of the speed post system.

Post the merger, customers are set to get speed post services who earlier used registered postal services for secure and address-specific deliveries. India Post clarified that key aspects like address proof and delivery to the concerned person would still be a part of the services. On the pricing front, India Post has said that the final pricing is still being figured out.

In this regard, the postal department has already started setting up larger integrated mail centers to take care of the rising delivery volume in an efficient manner. Consumer representatives welcomed these reforms, however, urging the department to avoid passing the entire operational cost to the end users and customers.

For the time being till the unveiling of the new service, both services, registered post and speed post, will function as usual. From September onwards, the erstwhile services will merge as one, i.e., speed post. Currently, the time taken to deliver a speed post ranges from one day for local consignments to five days for far-flung locations. A local delivery is a delivery that happens within the same pin code.
