New Delhi: Yamuna water has entered homes near the floodplains in Delhi after the river crossed the danger mark on Tuesday morning. The situation in Yamuna Bazar, along the riverbanks, has worsened, with water flooding several slums.
Authorities in the national capital had earlier issued an advisory urging residents of the Yamuna floodplain to move to safer locations as the water level rose steadily. At 8 am, the river was recorded at 205.80 metre at Loha Pul, and it is expected to swell further to 207 metre.
The flooding came after heavy rainfall across north India, including Delhi, and the release of water from the Hathnikund Barrage, which has begun reaching the capital.
Relief camps have been set up in Mayur Vihar, and evacuations are under way in vulnerable pockets such as Yamuna Bazar, areas under the Old Railway Bridge, and parts of Mayur Vihar.
