Heavy rains lash coastal Andhra Pradesh; red alert issued for ten districts

Visakhapatnam:  Heavy rains lashed several parts of Coastal Andhra Pradesh on Sunday in Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Alluri Sitharamaraju, Anakapalli, Kakinada, East Godavari, West Godavari, Eluru, NTR, Guntur, Bapatla among others.

Visakhapatnam received 125 mm rain followed by Anakapalli (107.8 mm), Vizianagaram recorded 58.3 mm rainfall, Alluri Sitharamaraju district received 51 mm rain and Srikakulam received 44.5 mm rainfall in a 24-hour period between August 17-18. Paderu mandal, ASR district received 161.4 mm rain, the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) said.

In Srikakulam, district authorities have declared a holiday for all government and private schools and Anganwadi centers on Monday. A control room has been set up in the collectorate with the number 08942 240557. Collector Swapnil Dinkar Pundkar advised people in the river basin areas to be alert and fishermen not to go fishing.

IMD Amaravati has issued red alert for extremely heavy rain in Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli, Kakinada, East Godavari, West Godavari, Yanam, Ambedkar Konaseema, Eluru, NTR, Guntur districts. Orange and yellow alerts have been issued for the rest.

The APSDMA said that low pressure over west-central and northwest Bay of Bengal will likely strengthen into a depression on Monday, August 18. It will likely cross south Odisha-north Andhra coasts by Tuesday afternoon. Due to the influence of low pressure, heavy to very heavy rains will occur at isolated places along coastal AP.

Similar weather conditions are expected to persist til August 20 in various parts of the state, as per forecasts.
