Chennai: The participation of Tamil actors Sivakarthikeyan and Ravi Mohan, along with music composer G.V. Prakash, in a Pongal celebration hosted by Union Minister of State L. Murugan in Delhi where Prime minister Narendra Modi as a chief guest, has sparked a political controversy. Congress MP Manickam Tagore sharply criticized the move, calling it the “Parasakthi team at the Sanghi group’s Pongal,” while drawing a contrast with the censorship troubles faced by Vijay’s ‘Jana Nayagan.’
The event, held at Murugan’s residence in the national capital, saw the ‘Parasakthi’ cast and their families in attendance. G.V. Prakash also performed a musical set that included verses from the Thiruvachagam. Their presence at a BJP-linked function has raised eyebrows, given that ‘Parasakthi’ is a film based on Tamil Nadu’s anti-Hindi imposition agitations of the 1960s—a narrative often positioned against the BJP’s promotion of Hindi.
Congress Reacts with Disapproval
Manickam Tagore took to social media to express his disapproval, posting, “Parasakthi team at the Sanghi group's Pongal… but Jana Nayagan is Blocked.” His comment underscores the Congress’s visible alignment with Vijay’s film, which has been stalled by censor delays, while highlighting its unease with the ‘Parasakthi’ team’s association with the BJP.
Political Backdrop and Film Polarization
The controversy comes amid an already charged pre-election climate in Tamil Nadu. While the Congress has openly supported ‘Jana Nayagan’ and criticized the CBFC’s delay as politically motivated.
The event has fuelled speculation about political messaging ahead of the assembly elections, with critics questioning whether the presence of the film’s team signals tacit political alignment. Meanwhile, Congress supporters on social media have begun suggesting that the BJP is endorsing ‘Parasakthi’ to counter the influence of Vijay’s Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK).
