Congress sweeps Telangana Gram Panchayat elections

Congress party secured a majority in all 30 districts except Siddipet. Out of a total of 4,159 seats, including those won unanimously, Congress-backed candidates won 2,286 seats in third phase of the election.

Hyderabad: Telangana Congress swept Gram Panchayat elections in the state, which concluded on Wednesday, December 17.

After winning approximately 56 percent of the seats in the first and second phases, the party maintained the same lead in the third phase as well. Out of a total of 4,159 seats, including those won unanimously, Congress-backed candidates won 2,286 seats. BRS won 1,142 seats, BJP 242, and others 479. Among these, CPI-backed candidates won in 24 places and CPM in 7.

Gram Panchayat election by the numbers:

Elections were held in three phases for 12,733 Gram Panchayat Sarpanch positions across 31 districts. Of these, Congress won 7,010 seats, BRS won 3,502 seats, BJP secured 688 seats, and others won 1,505 seats. Congress achieved significant leads in the districts of Nalgonda, Khammam, Bhadradri, Hanamkonda, Jagtial, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mahabubabad, Mahbubnagar, Mancherial, Nagarkurnool, Nizamabad, Peddapalli, Ranga Reddy, Sangareddy, Suryapet, Vikarabad, Kamareddy, and Yadadri Bhuvangiri.

The polling percentage in phase three of polling stood at 85.77 per cent, which was about 0.9 percent lower than the second phase. A total of 85.30 per cent of votes were polled across all three phases.

Highest polling of 92.56 percent was recorded in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district in phase three. More men (92.79 percent) voted than women (92.33 percent).

The lowest polling of 76.45 percent was recorded in Nizamabad. Out of a total of 50,56,334 voters, 43,37,024 votes (85.77 percent) participated in the election. Among them, women voters were in the majority. Out of a total of 25,77,683 women voters, 85.96 percent, or 22,15,683, participated in the polling. There were 24,78,519 male voters, of whom 21,21,269 (85.59 percent) cast their votes. Out of 142 others, 72 (50.70 percent) cast their votes. Except for a few isolated incidents in the state, voting proceeded peacefully, State Election Commission said.

State Chief Secretary Ramakrishna Rao, DGP Shivadhar Reddy, and State Election Commissioner Rani Kumudini monitored the polling process of the third phase through webcasting.

The Chief Secretary congratulated the district collectors, officials, and polling staff for conducting the elections smoothly. The DGP stated that the police had provided extensive security arrangements. The election process, which began on November 25, concluded on Wednesday. 

Winning candidates send out invites for oath taking ceremonies:

Many newly elected sarpanches and deputy sarpanches have sent out invites for their oath taking ceremonies, with Telangana government logo and their pictures, tv9 telugu reported.

Many are also planning grand celebrations for December 22, the day of oath taking ceremony, and are preparing to create a festive ambience. Several have posted on their social media accounts inviting local MLAs, MPs, villagers and their supporters for the ceremony.
