New Delhi: Abhigyan Kundu scripted history on Tuesday by becoming the first Indian batter to score a double century in Youth ODIs in the Under-19 Asia Cup 2025 match against Malaysia in Dubai.
The 17-year-old star batter overhauled Vaibhav Suryavanshi's record for the highest individual score by an Indian in Youth ODIs. Suryavanshi amassed 171 in India's opening game of the tournament against the UAE last week.
Kundu came to the crease after Vaibhav Suryavanshi was dismissed for 50 off 26 balls. He reached the 50-run mark in 44 balls and completed his century from just 80 balls. However, he changed his gears after breaching the three-figure mark and completed his landmark double-century in just 121 balls.
Kundu stitched a 209-run stand with Vedant Trivedi for the fourth wicket and followed it with a blazing partnership of 87 runs from 36 balls with Kanishk Chouhan to help India post a mammoth 408 for seven in its 50 overs.
Kundu's unbeaten 209 is the second-highest in U-19 cricket behind South African batter Jorich Van Schalkwyk's 215. He, however, now holds the record for the highest individual score in the U-19 Asia Cups.
Born on April 30, 2008, in Mumbai, Kundu, the left-handed wicket-keeper is an attacking player by nature. He made his official debut at the junior level in the Under-19 team and attracted attention with some consistent performances. He was part of the Indian Under-19 squad that toured England and Australia, making significant contributions during the series.
