New Delhi: BMW India is at present working to bring a much more powerful version of the X3 petrol to India. At present, the X3 comes in the xDrive20 form with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that makes 190 bhp, a performance figure that is much less than the rivals' SUVs in the segment.
In its competition, the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 2.0-litre petrol engine produces 258 bhp, the Audi Q5 and the Volvo XC60 2.0-litre petrol make 250. The X3 petrol’s performance is clearly in a much lower rung, and at such a price point, the competition is for the minute numbers.
BMW will be correcting this poor performance of the X3 with the introduction of the xDrive30 variant, which will still be a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine but with higher tuning. The power output jumps by a significant 258 bhp, with the torque being at 400 Nm. There’s also a 48V mild-hybrid system that can add around 11 bhp and 25 Nm of torque under very hard acceleration, and the power will go to all four wheels through the BMW’s xDrive system.
Taking from the feedback they have received, BMW are also planning to replace the current mesh-like sustainable material on the dashboard with a leatherette that is preferred by the Indian buyers. The sustainable materials are being offered as a cost option in markets abroad. Still, the X3 prices are not going to change due to leatherette dashboard trim.
