New Delhi: Following years of a blank space in the portfolio, Tata Harrier and Safari are finally set to get petrol versions, which will be launched on December 9th, 2025. It has been in development for over five years, and the 1.5-litre four-cylinder direct injection turbo-petrol unit is part of Tata’s ‘Hyperion’ engine and was even shown in the Auto Expo 2023.
Both the Harrier and Safari petrol versions are likely to have the same tuning as the unit shown at the Auto Expo of 2023. Which would mean an output of 170 bhp and torque of 280 Nm. It will be coming with both manual and automatic gearboxes, but what type of automatic gearboxes, torque convertor or dual-clutch, is unknown.
The engine will be making a debut with the Sierra, which is set to launch on November 25th.
There is also a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that might not come to the Harrier or Safari but will be debuting again with the Sierra as the entry-level powertrain. The turbo-petrol 1.5-litre engine is expected to be borrowed by Jeep for the Compass and Meridian.
Prices for the Harrier and Safari petrol are expected to be a little less than the diesel version. The Harrier at present falls in the price cap of Rs 14 lakh and goes up to Rs 25.25 lakh, while the Safari costs around Rs 14.66 lakh and Rs 25.96 lakh. Tata’s five-seat flagship will be taking on Jeep Compass and MG Hector, with the three-row variant of the Mahindra XUV700, Hyundai Alcazar and Jeep Meridian.
Apart from the Jeep SUVs, all the others have a petrol variant, and this is a significant market that Tata is capturing. For the longest time, this was one missing piece of the puzzle for the brand.
