Jubilee Hills bypoll: Voters flock to polling stations, 31.94% turnout recorded till 1 pm

The bypoll is necessitated by the demise of Jubilee Hills MLA Maganti Gopinath. His widow Maganti Sunitha is one of the candidates for the election.

Hyderabad: Voting in Jubilee Hills bye-election began at 7 am on Tuesday, November 11 under tight security.  

A total of 4,01,365 voters are eligible to exercise their constitutional right to vote. Out of these, 2,08,561 are men, 1,92,779 are women and 25 belong to another gender.

 The Election Commission has set up 407 polling stations and deployed around 5,000 personnel for election duties. In addition to 1,761 Hyderabad City Police personnel, an additional 800 Central Police personnel have been deployed.

Congress vs BRS vs BJP:

Although there are 58 candidates, the main contest is between the ruling Congress, opposition BRS and BJP. The three candidates include former MLA Maganti Gopinath's widow Sunita from Bharat Rashtra Samithi, Naveen Yadav from Congress, and Lankala Deepak Reddy from BJP.

Voting underway for Jubilee Hills bypoll

Speaking to the media after casting his vote, Congress candidate Naveen Yadav said that polling has been peaceful so far. “I only entered the booth to check the arrangements. Nearly 70–100 votes were cast in the first 45 minutes.”

Jubilee Hills by-election returning officer RV Karnan said that the polling will be peaceful. While problems arose with EVMs in 11 areas, reserve EVMs have been replaced, he said. Karnan called on everyone to exercise their right to vote.

By 1 pm, about 31.94 percent voter turnout has been recorded. Only 50.18 percent voted in 2014, 45.59% in 2018, and 47.58% in 2023. In the Lok Sabha elections, only 39.89% people voted in this assembly constituency in 2019 and 45.59% in 2024.

Prominent Telugu film personalities such as Tanikella Bharani and SS Rajamouli have also cast their vote. In Vengalrao Nagar neighbourhood, BRS has alleged that Congress leaders are distributing money to voters.
