New Delhi: Thousands of young aspirants right after Class 12 seek to join the defence services. The career pathway in defence offers structured, early leadership roles and long-term job security. For those who wish to serve the nation in uniform, several national-level entrance exams provide direct entry into the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force immediately after completing Plus Two.With the government expanding recruitment pathways in both traditional officer-entry routes and newer schemes, careers in defence services are no longer limited to those who have completed graduation. National Defence Academy (NDA) exam

Conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) twice a year, the NDA exam is the most sought-after defence entrance test after Class 12. It offers entry into the Army, Navy and Air Force as commissioned officers. Candidates selected through NDA undergo three years of joint training at the National Defence Academy followed by specialised training at their respective service academies. The exam tests mathematics and general ability, while final selection depends on performance in the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview.

Technical Entry Scheme (TES)- Indian Army

Candidates with a science background can join the Indian Army directly as officers through the Technical Entry Scheme. Candidates who have passed Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics can apply for this. TES does not require a written exam and shortlisted candidates are selected through the SSB interview. The selected candidates receive technical training before being commissioned as officers in technical arms of the Army.

Indian Navy SSR and AA Recruitment

The Indian Navy conducts recruitment for Senior Secondary Recruits (SSR) and Artificer Apprentice (AA) roles for Class 12 pass candidates. These entries allow to join the Navy as sailors where extensive training in naval operations, engineering and technical trades are provided. Selection involves a written test, physical fitness test and medical exam.

Indian Air Force Agniveer (Vayu)

Under the Agnipath scheme, the Indian Air Force recruits candidates as Agniveer (Vayu) after Class 12. This entry allows young aspirants to serve in the Air Force for a fixed period. Military training, professional skills and a service package is provided under IAF Agniveer (Vayu). The selection process involves written test, physical fitness assessment and medical evaluation.

Indian Coast Guard Navik and Yantrik exam

The Indian Coast Guard offers opportunities to Class 12 students through Navik and Yantrik entries. These roles focus on maritime security, search and rescue operations and technical maintenance of vessels and equipment. IIT Kharagpur Placement 2026: Phase 1 records highest offer of Rs 2.44 crore; over 1,500 job offers

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur had a record breaking phase 1 placement season with the highest cost-to-company (CTC) package offer standing at Rs 2.44 crore. As per an official statement, a total of 1,501 job offers were made during phase 1 of the placement session.The IIT Kharagpur phase 1 placement drive was conducted between December 1, 2025, to January 3, 2026. The figure includes 457 pre-placement offers (PPOs) and 15 international offers. Earlier in the session, the institute had announced a major achievement when it crossed 1,000 job offers in a single day. Highlighting the moment, the IIT Kharagpur's statement stated, 'A historic milestone was achieved on day two of placement at 8 AM when the institute crossed 1,000 job offers.' This figure was confirmed after reviewing data from the entire phase 1 placement period.The placement drive attracted several well-known companies from India and abroad. Major recruiters included Apple, Tesla, Google, Microsoft, Nvidia, Amazon, Walmart, Goldman Sachs, McKinsey, JP Morgan Chase, Accenture, and Samsung Korea among many others. Core and manufacturing sector firms such as Airbus, Boeing, Mercedes, Siemens, Caterpillar, ExxonMobil, L&T Finance, and Tata Group also took part.Despite uncertainty around US visa policies, American companies continued to show a strong interest in hiring students from IIT Kharagpur.Commenting on the outcome, Chairperson of the Career Development Centre, Prof Sanjay Gupta said, 'The exceptional outcomes of the placement season underscore the strength of our collaborative model, despite the challenges in the job market.'The phase 1 placements conducted over a month saw participation from leading Indian and international companies across multiple sectors. From technology and finance to core engineering and manufacturing, recruiters offered roles to students from diverse academic backgrounds. The phase 2 of the IIT Kharagpur placement session 2025–26 started on January 16.

Republic Day 2026: 26 year old Simran Bala to lead all male CRPF contingent on R'day parade

New Delhi: As India is set to celebrate its 77th Republic Day a young officer from Jammu and Kashmir will create history on the grand occasion at Kartavya Path. 26 years old Assistant Commandant Simran Bala will become the first woman officer to lead an all-male contingent of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) during the Republic Day Parade in New Delhi on January 26.Commanding a marching unit of over 140 male personnel, Simran’s role is significant not only for the CRPF but also for women in India’s uniformed forces.

From Nowshera to Kartavya Path

Simran Bala hails from Nowshera in the Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir which is a border area close to the Line of Control. She grew up in a region shaped by security challenges, ideas of discipline, duty and service were part of everyday life. She is the first woman from the Rajouri district to join the CRPF as an officer.

Education and early career

Simran did her graduation in Political Science from the Government College for Women, Gandhinagar, Jammu.Simran was commissioned into the CRPF in April 2025 and received her first posting in the ‘Bastariya’ battalion in Chhattisgarh, a unit involved in anti-Naxal operations. During her training at the CRPF academy in Gurugram she earned awards for best officer in training and public speaking.

UPSC in first attempt

Simran joined the CRPF after clearing the UPSC Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) exam in her first attempt in the year 2023, securing an All India Rank of 82. That same year, she was also the only woman candidate from Jammu and Kashmir to qualify, quickly emerging as a role model for aspirants across the state.

Selected on merit and leadership

Her selection to lead the all-male CRPF contingent was based on her performance and leadership skills. During intense Republic Day Parade rehearsals, senior officers were impressed by her confidence, drill precision and command over the unit leading to her historic selection.While women officers have led CRPF contingents in the past, this is for the first time a woman will command a marching group of over 140 male personnel at the national event.

Tighter security, new checks: UPSC’s face authentication move explained

New Delhi: In the wake of the irregularities in the NEET UG 2024 examination, the government has decided to reinstate security checks in several institutions, including the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), a prominent recruitment agency in the country. The move aims to strengthen the integrity of the examination process further.After conducting a pilot program to test an artificial intelligence-enabled facial authentication technology for quick and secure candidate verification, the UPSC has announced "All candidates appearing in the UPSC examination will undergo face authentication at the venue."

What is UPSC's face authentication?

With an aim to keep all the security leaks at bay, the UPSC has introduced facial authentication technology before appearing for the examination. The Commission has carried out a pilot programme to test AI-enabled facial authentication technology and secure candidate verification during two examinations - NDA (National Defence Academy) and NA (Naval Academy) II Examination, 2025 and CDS (Combined Defence Services) II Examination, 2025, held on September 14, 2025. This pilot project was conducted with the assistance of the National e-Governance Division (NeGD) at select centres in Delhi-NCR. In which candidates were digitally matched with the photographs submitted at the time of registration. UPSC chairman Ajay Kumar said this new system will not only reduce 8-10 seconds of verification time per candidate but also add an extra layer of security.

The work that led to UPSC's face authentication

After the NEET UG 2024 debacle and allegations of misconduct by trainee IAS officer Puja Khedkar, the Commission has decided to restore trust by introducing digital technology to its exam system. It has been granted permission to conduct Aadhaar-based authentication to verify the identity of candidates during the application process and at various stages of the examination. The move aimed at strengthening the UPSC's examination process by introducing Aadhaar-based fingerprint authentication of candidates and facial recognition during the exam. The UPSC's 2024 notice reads regarding the use of “Aadhaar-based fingerprint authentication (else digital fingerprint capturing) & facial recognition of candidates and QR code scanning of e-admit cards” and “Live AI-based CCTV surveillance service.” After the success of the pilot project, UPSC has made it mandatory to undergo face authentication at the venue. The UPSC conducts various recruitment examinations for government jobs, including the prestigious Civil Services Examination (CSE), National Defence Academy (NDA), Combined Defence Services (CDS), and others.

New Delhi: The Staff Selection Commission has released the SSC exam calendar 2026-27. In the exam calendar, candidates can check the notification release date, application timeline and the exam date for the Combined Graduate Level (CGL), Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL), Junior Engineer (JE), Multi Tasking Staff (MTS), Stenographer, Sub Inspector, GD Constable and others.These exams are conducted every year to fill vacancies across ministries, departments and organisations under the Government of India. Aspirants must follow the schedule and prepare for the exam accordingly. As per the SSC exam schedule 2026-27, most of the major exams will begin from March 2026 and will conclude by early 2027. Candidates also need to note that the schedule is tentative and is subject to change.

New Delhi: The Staff Selection Commission has released the SSC Multi-Tasking (non-technical) Staff and Havaldar (CBIC and CBN) exam 2025 schedule. As per the SSC MTS 2025 dates, the exam will be conducted on February 4, 2026. The self-slotting process will start on January 15 and candidates can book the slot at ssc.gov.in.SSC MTS 2025 exam will be conducted as a computer-based test. The Havaldar post exam will be in CBT mode followed by a Physical Efficiency Test (PET) or Physical Standard Test (PST). The question paper will have objective-type and multiple-choice questions (MCQs). SSC MTS exam will be conducted in two sessions. The questions will be in English, Hindi and 13 regional languages.

SSC MTS question paper pattern

The exam will be divided in a total of four sections. Session 1 includes numerical and mathematical ability with 20 questions and reasoning ability and problem-solving with 20 questions. Session 2 consists of general awareness with 25 questions and English language and comprehension with 25 questions.The SSC MTS exam will be held for a duration of 45 minutes. A 60 minutes time duration is alloted for candidates using a scribe. There will be a total of 90 questions- 40 in session 1 and 50 in session 2. The complete paper is of 270 marks (120 in session 1 and 150 in session 2).As per the SSC MTS marking scheme, in session 1, candidates will get three marks for each correct answer. There will be no negative marking for incorrect attempts. In session 2, three marks will be given for each correct answer and one mark will be deducted for every incorrect answer.

SSC MTS admit card

The SSC MTS admit card release date is yet to be announced by the exam conducting authority. However, it is likely to be made available in the second week of January 2026. To download the SSC MTS 2025 admit card, valid registration number and password will be required. Candidates must carry the admit card on the exam day.

New Delhi: The Department of School Education has released the Telangana Teacher Eligibility Test (TS TET) admit card 2026 January session. IIT Kanpur Placements 2025: 16% jump in day 1 hiring with 672 offers

New Delhi: The new Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) placement season kick-started with a hiring surge by several IITs across the country, including IIT Kanpur. The institute has recorded a 16 per cent increase compared to last year's day 1 placements. IIT Kanpur received a total of 672 offers on the opening day alone. The number is expected to rise further for IIT Kanpur's placements as the results are pending for several candidates. There is a remarkable 20 per cent rise in IIT Kanpur placements over last year's in Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs). The official statement from IIT Kanpur reports that PPOs played a crucial role with 253 offers, which is a 27 per cent increase compared to the last year. However, a total of nine students obtained overseas offers.IIT Kanpur Placements 2025: Over 250 companies participate More than 250 companies, including foreign have participated in the IIT Kanpur Placements 2025-26 drive. New Delhi: Leading Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have barred more than 20 companies from participating in this year’s placement season after these firms cancelled job offers made to students in the previous academic year. Some offers were withdrawn as late as June or July, just days before the joining date.Since most IITs do not allow students with confirmed offers to attend further placement interviews, many affected candidates were left with almost no time or opportunity to find alternative roles. Following repeated instances across campuses, IITs jointly decided to blacklist these companies for the current placement cycle.

Banned list finalised after IITs report offer withdrawals

Placement officials said the list was compiled after several IITs reported cancellations from the same set of companies, many of which operate in the data analytics and software sectors. Although barred from campus placements, these companies can still hire students off-campus.An IIT professor involved in the placement process said placement teams from 15 IITs worked together to verify the companies’ past behaviour. 'We looked at their past records too. Some of these companies had a history of revoking offers and six to seven IITs had already banned them from participation,' the professor said. He added that some companies even lowered salary packages after issuing appointment letters.

IITs aim to broaden opportunities despite slow job market

To expand opportunities for students, IITs are also bringing in more start-ups supported under the Centre’s Viksit Bharat programme. Officials said this move is expected to provide additional avenues, especially in a slow hiring market.'The job market is slow, but we are trying to reach out to many more companies and encourage start-ups incubated on prominent campuses to reach the best targets,' the professor said. He added that placements have begun on a positive note.

Strong hiring on day 1 across IITs

Despite concerns over job offer cancellations, day 1 of placements saw strong participation from major recruiters. Companies offered a range of high-paying roles across profiles. IIT Roorkee had received eight international offers and 428 domestic offers in its first slot.Top recruiters included Amazon, American Express, NVIDIA, Qualcomm, DE Shaw, Databricks, Eternal (Zomato), Flipkart and Google. Several proprietary trading and algorithmic trading firms such as Da Vinci Derivatives, NK Securities Research, Rubrik and Squarepoint Capital also made key offers.Even though pre-placement offers (PPOs) saw a 10 to 20 per cent increase this year, many students chose to sit for day 1 interviews instead hoping for better roles or higher packages. At IIT-BHU, a total of 1,701 students including 1,100 BTech, 550 MTech and IDD students and 40 PhD candidates, are participating in placements this year. This comes despite the institute securing 280 PPOs before the placement season began.

Formal job creation decline in India: October sees 20% drop amid remote work rises

Mumbai: Not good news for job aspirants because of low job postings in October. According to a report, the formal job creation in the country is down by nearly 20 per cent year-on-year and 5.6 per cent compared to the previous month. According to the Indeed report, this marks the second consecutive month of decline in job creation, leaving postings nearly 20 per cent lower than the same month a year ago. In the last three months, job postings declined in sectors such as banking and finance, where postings fell by 25.6 per cent, legal fell by 25.6 per cent, retail fell by 16.7 per cent, and loading and stocking fell by 15 per cent.

Workforce transitioning to formal work arrangements

"Every month, the Indian workforce is gradually transitioning towards more formal work arrangements. As the nation transitions, job creation in the formal sector is expected to outpace overall employment growth nationwide. This transition is also why job postings in India have been stronger than in other markets, both during the post-pandemic job boom and the subsequent slowdown," PTI quoted Indeed's APAC Senior Economist Callam Pickering said.

Strong performers in job market

Amid decline, there are some strong performers in the job market, such as cleaning and sanitation rose around 20 per cent over the last three months. The community and social service rose by 17.4 per cent, dental up by 13.1 per cent, nursing up by 11.2 per cent, and food preparation and service rose by 10.3 per cent. The human resources also rose by 2.3 per cent.

According to the report, 9.1 per cent of job postings explicitly mentioned phrases such as 'work from home' or 'work remotely' in their job descriptions. New Delhi: The Staff Selection Committee (SSC) has revised and released the Delhi Police Sub-Inspector and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) 2024 recruitment result. The commission decided to review the Delhi police SI, CAPFs 2024 result, as the number of representations was unusually high. After the scrutiny of inconsistencies in the data provided by the nodal force, BSF was found and based on it, the discrepancies have been rectified.Discrepancies were found in the Document Verification (DV), Detailed Medical Examination (DME), and Review Medical Examination (RME). However, the commission has made no changes in the status of candidates withheld in the SSC SI Delhi Police, CAPFs 2024 result that was announced earlier.The commission's official notice reads, 'As the number of representations was unusually high, therefore, the Commission, in consultation with the nodal force Border Security Force (BSF), immediately undertook a comprehensive review of the final result and found inconsistencies in the DV/DME/RME data provided by the nodal force.'

Allahabad Central University VC Sangita Srivastava’s tenure extended, first to get extension in 19 years

New Delhi: Allahabad Central University has officially extended the tenure of Vice Chancellor Professor Sangita Srivastava. Her five-year term was scheduled to end on November 29, but the Union Ministry of Education issued an order allowing her to continue until further notice.

The extension has been done amid the process of appointing the next Vice Chancellor is still underway. Allahabad University was granted Central University status in the year 2005, and this is the first time in nearly 19 years that a sitting permanent Vice Chancellor has received an extension.

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Professor Jaya Kapoor Chadha, confirmed the extension and said that the decision is important for maintaining continuity and ensuring smooth progress of ongoing academic and administrative activities.

The extension is expected to provide stability at a time when the university is preparing for leadership transition and planning future reforms.

Selection process for next VC underway

Meanwhile, the selection process for the next Vice Chancellor is underway. Recently, the Executive Council finalised the names of the search committee members. This committee will shortlist eligible candidates and send the final recommendations to the central government.

University’s past Vice Chancellors

After gaining the central university status, Allahabad University has seen several changes in leadership. Professor R G Harshe served as the first permanent Vice Chancellor and successfully completed his full term.

In 2010, Professor A K Singh took charge but resigned in 2013. Later, in 2015, Professor R L Hangloo was appointed as the third permanent Vice Chancellor. However, he too resigned in December 2019 following controversies.

On November 30, 2020, Professor Sangita Srivastava became the fourth permanent Vice Chancellor. With her extension, she has now become only the second Vice Chancellor to complete a full five-year term since the university became a Central University.
